How To Make The Perfect Pot Brownies

January 23, 2012
You can make delicious pot brownies just like these.

When creating a tiered list for special stoner snacks, pot brownies have to be at the top. Not only are they a delicious baked good, fit for satisfying any case of the munchies—they are also packed with enough pot to keep you baked for the remainder of the night!

But as many prolific bakers have stated: baking is a science. And between decarboxylation, THC extraction, and dosing – baking with cannabis is definitely a science! But, have no fear. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be baked Betty Crocker in no time.

How to Make Pot Brownies

In beginning your cannabis infused brownies, there are a couple key steps to bring bakers the most potent treats possible: decarboxylation and THC extraction.

How to Decarb Your Weed

In order for weed to become psychoactive, bringing users the “high” effect that they’re looking for, it must be activated with heat. Heating cannabis leads to a chemical reaction called decarboxylation, a process categorized by the turning of THCA, a non-psychoactive compound, into the precious THC that stoners know and love. Though it adds an extra step to your cannabis brownie recipe, decarbing is simple, and it elevates your brownies to a whole new level.

You’ll Need:

  • Oven
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Grinder
  • Weed

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. As the oven is preheating, grind up the bud.
  2. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper, and evenly spread the ground cannabis on top.
  3. Bake the cannabis for approximately 30 minutes. When finished, the bud should be an earthy greenish-brown.

Once you’ve decarbed your marijuana, you’re almost ready to actually begin making pot brownies. Don’t get ahead of yourself, though – there are still a few key prep steps!

Dosing – How Many Grams of Weed for Pot Brownies?

Finding the perfect dosage for homemade edibles can be tricky, and it may take some trial and error before you hit the ideal level of potency. Nonetheless, it’s not impossible to find how much weed you need to make pot brownies. To start, determining your dosage is wholly based upon:

  • The flower’s THC content
  • The user’s tolerance level

Most of the time, estimated THC content can be found online in strain reviews. From there, multiply that potency percentage by the dry weight of the weed you plan to use, and there’s the THC potency of your dish. This number can be used to determine dosage by individual serving simply by dividing it by the number of servings in your pan.

However, there’s a preferred method to ensure you get the right potency in every pan of cannabis infused brownies: THC extraction.

How to Make the Best Cannabis Oil and Cannabis Butter for Pot Brownies

Infusing the decarbed weed with a fatty base can guarantee that the THC content is evenly spread throughout your cannabis brownie recipe. As far as fatty bases go—some brownie recipes call for butter, and some brownie recipes call for oil. Here are recipes for tackling both:

How to Make Cannabis Butter

You’ll Need:

  • 1 Cup (8 ounces) of Butter
  • 1 ½ Cups of Water
  • Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Cheesecloth
  • ½ Ounce of Decarbed Weed

  1. Add the butter and water into a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Once the butter has melted, add the ½ oz. of weed. Mix well, and cover the saucepan with a lid to simmer. While simmering, be sure the temperature doesn’t reach above 185 degrees F.
  3. Let the mixture simmer for 4 hours, stirring frequently to ensure the butter doesn’t burn.
  4. After simmering, strain the butter mixture through the cheesecloth. Once strained, ring out the remaining liquid from the cloth.
  5. Refrigerate or freeze the mixture until solidified.

How to Make Cannabis Oil

You’ll Need:

  • 1 Cup (8 ounces) of Coconut or Vegetable Oil
  • Small Amount of Water
  • Spoon
  • Cheesecloth
  • ½ Ounce of Decarbed Weed

  1. Add the oil and decarbed weed into a saucepan over low-medium heat.
  2. Simmer for 3-4 hours, stirring regularly to avoid scorching. To further avoid burning the mixture, add a small amount of water.
  3. After simmering, strain the butter mixture through the cheesecloth. Once strained, ring out the remaining liquid from the cloth.
  4. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.

Now that you have your cannabis infused oil or butter, you’re all set to begin making pot brownies!

How to Make Weed Edible Brownie Batter from the Box

Once you’ve taken the time to decarb your cannabis and infuse it into some wonderful butter or oil, it’s all easy sailing in the boxed brownie life.

Most off-the-shelf brownie mix needs a few add-ins to fill out the ingredient list. Betty Crocker Brownie Mix, for example, requires 3 tablespoons of water, 2 eggs, and a ½ cup of vegetable oil. If you want to turn those Betty Crocker brownies into “special” brownies, simply replace the ½ cup of vegetable oil with a ½ cup of your cannabis oil!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Make a Low Dose Weed Edible Brownie Recipe?

Dosage should be based on the marijuana’s THC content and the user’s tolerance level. If you’re looking to make low-potency brownies, you can approach that in a couple of ways. Option 1 is simply utilizing a strain with lower THC content or just adding less cannabis to your canna-butter/canna-oil mixture. Option 2 is lessening the amount of cannabis-infused products you use in the batter by cutting it with normal oil or butter.

How Long Do Pot Brownies Last?

If you’re wondering how long an edible high lasts, it’s generally 6-8 hours, but that can vary based upon tolerance.

If you’re wondering how long pot brownies last before they go bad, that can vary as well. Similar to regular brownies, the longer you leave pot brownies untouched, the more stale it will become. Generally, the rule of thumb with edibles is to store them in a fridge, and consume within 5-7 days if possible.

Can You Freeze Pot Brownies?

Yes! Freezing cannabis brownies is a great way to extend their shelf life without losing any potency. If it’s more convenient than freezing a tray of brownies, you can also freeze and portion your cannabutter to ensure you can make fresh cannabis brownies whenever you want!

How Much Weed Should I Use For Pot Brownies?

The question isn’t how much cannabis you should use for your brownies – it’s how much cannabis you should use for your oil or butter. The most common ratio is 1 oz. of bud to 16 oz. of oil or butter.

The recipe above calls for ⅔ cup of cannabis oil, which breaks down to a bit over a ¼ oz. of weed.

How Do I Make More Potent Pot Brownies?

To make more potent pot brownies, simply using a more potent strain of weed. Higher THC content in the flower will translate to more potent cannabis oil/butter, which will translate to a more intense high from the brownies. If you don’t have access to higher quality bud, simply increase the amount of flower used to make your cannabutter/cannaoil.

How Long Do Pot Brownies Take to Kick In?

Edible cannabis generally takes effect 30-90 minutes after ingestion, but that can vary depending on the individual.
