At a meeting in Mt. Pleasant, the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (MiNORML) appointed new board members, assigned legal counsel duties and held an auction to benefit their charitable works.
The chapter’s quarterly meeting at Riverwood Resort also included financial disclosure, election results from the online opinion poll, and an update from each of the Board’s Directors.
Lapeer attorney Bernard Jocuns was appointed as MiNORML’s legal counsel. The chapter’s Executive Director, Matthew Abel, is an attorney as well; Jocuns announced the intent to form a MiNORML legal committee to speak on issues of significance to the Michigan cannabis community, including pending cases before the appellate and Supreme Courts.
Abel and fellow Board member Steven Sharpe were returned to their positions by Board decision; filling vacant positions were Adam Brook and Rick Thompson. As the former promoter of the annual Hash Bash event, Brook has along history of speaking on the subject of marijuana. Thompson is the Editor of The Compassion Chronicles, he is a writer and photographer for three industry publications in the state and is co-host of The Planet Green Trees Radio Show. Thompson assumed the duties of Board Secretary; Brook has not yet been tapped to run a named Directorship.
A new type of polling took place to help the Board decide which of the candidates would become new members. Both paid membership and interested supporters cast votes online for their favorite candidates; the top vote-getter was Adam Brook.
The auction featured donated items from individuals and businesses from around the state. A $300 vaporizer was auctioned off for about half the retail value, a wheelchair, many shirts and hoodies of differing designs and some glassware were also offered. A walking stick, carved by Ron Youngblood, seemed to be popular with the attendees.
Speakers at the meeting included attorneys, activists and visionaries. Dr. Paul Meyer and Board Member Trena Moss provided musical entertainment. A good number of students representing both Central Michigan and Northern Michigan Universities attended the meeting. CMU’s SAMRC and NMU’s SSDP Chapters were well represented by their ambassadors.
