On February 5, 2013 Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) introduced H.R. 499, the “Ending Federal Prohibition of Marijuana Act of 2013.”

Rep. Polis’ bill would end federal marijuana prohibition and let states decide their own marijuana policies without the threat of federal interference, and would set up a regulatory process – similar to the one for alcohol – for states that decide to legalize. Specifically, the bill removes marijuana in any form from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, adds marijuana to the sections of the U.S. code governing “intoxicating liquors”, and transfers Federal marijuana jurisdiction from the Drug Enforcement Administration and gives it to the newly-renamed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, Firearms and Explosives.
