Legislation to explicitly legalize the medical use of cannabis in Tennessee has been filed in the state’s House of Representatives.

Under the proposed law filed last week by Representative Sherry Jones, the possession and use of cannabis will be legalized for qualifying patients (those with debilitating conditions such as cancer, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis, to name a few) and their caregiver.

Individual physicians would be tasked with deciding the possession limit for their patients.

State-licensed medical cannabis dispensaries will be authorized to distribute cannabis to patients.

“It’s just simply a matter of being rational and compassionate,” says Representative Jones.

If approved into law, the measure would take effect in early 2015.
