Is Marijuana in your Kids Candy? BOO!
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — As this Halloween season gets underway, propaganda is quickly spreading alerting parents to be on the lookout for marijuana edibles. CBS reported that parents are concerned that edibles such as gummy bears and brownies could end up in their children’s trick or treat bags.
Although there has never been a reported occurrence of a child receiving pot infused edibles for Halloween candy, some dispensaries are worried about the possibility of an accident happening. The owner of a collective in Venice told CBS that it’s doubtful someone would want to give away their medical marijuana for Halloween. “I can’t imagine people taking real expensive medical marijuana candies and dropping it in a kid’s bag on purpose, but it is possible that it could inadvertently end up there.”
Doctors in Oregon are warning parents to check their child’s candy before eating any for cannabis edibles. Dr. Patrick Luedtke told reporters “We want parents to screen the candy before they’re children are eating it and not have them eat it while they’re out on the street trick-or-treating.”
Massachusetts is also suffering from reefer madness. Massachusetts police are advising that parents monitor any unwrapped treats in their child’s candy stash for marijuana edibles. The Chief of Walpole Police John Carmichael Jr., who is opposed to medical marijuana sent out a warning on Twitter with photos of edibles for concerned parents.
Florida is issuing similar warnings about marijuana edibles on Halloween. The Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa is also telling people to monitor their kid’s candy to check for edibles laced with THC. Dr. Alfred Aleguas said that emergency rooms have seen adults come in before who had unwittingly eaten gummy bears with THC, adding “You just never know nowadays.”
Regardless of the fact that there isn’t a actually a problem with kids getting pot in their trick or treat bags instead of candy, every Halloween the warnings about the possibility arise and the stigma continues. Happy Halloween!
