PORTLAND, ME – A new Coalition of Mainers will gather Tuesday, November 19, 2013 in the Maine Room on the second floor of Portland City Hall to officially outline the next phase of the campaign to regulate and tax marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. Rep. Diane Russell will also outline her new bill, “An Act To Align Maine’s Marijuana Laws with the Guidelines Governing Taxation and Regulation Issued by the Federal Government.”

On Election Day, 67% of voters in Portland endorsed an ordinance to allow adults over the age of 21 to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. Since then, the general consensus has been that Maine is primed to be the first Legislature in the country to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana.
“A major reason for the prohibition is to keep marijuana out of the hands of kids,” said retired Richmond Superintendent Denny Gallaudet. ”However, in the 2011 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, many more high school students report using marijuana regularly than cigarettes (for juniors 25% versus 17%). The current policy is clearly not working; it’s time to move to a strict regulation policy instead.”
