Marijuana policies are changing around the country. Medical marijuana laws, decriminalization, and the legalization of marijuana for adults in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia have many people asking what’s next for California, including a 2016 ballot initiative.

Marijuana has long been the biggest cash crop in California, and the cultivation of marijuana, especially in the northern part of the state has a legacy as old as marijuana prohibition itself. Cartels and others who grow marijuana in inappropriate places put the land and wildlife, already fragile, in a state of distress.

Concern over the impact of marijuana cultivation on the environment is shared by environmental groups and cannabis farmers trying to grow their crop without these negative impacts.

In considering the next steps for California’s marijuana policies, it is important to explore the damage done to the environment as a result of decades of unregulated marijuana cultivation and to being to devise a plan to repair this damage in a post legalization environment. What does legalization mean for environmental restoration efforts? What role can cannabis farmers play in ensuring a sustainable industry moving forward?
