The issue of marijuana legalization is a hot topic in media across the country. Saginaw area residents will be able to speak directly to the people proposing a legalization program for Michigan during a Town Hall-style meeting taking place at the Butman-Fish Library at 1716 Hancock on Saturday July 18.
The Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee, commonly known as MILegalize, will take questions from citizens during the two-hour session from 3:00 – 5:00PM.
MILegalize will be represented by board members Rick Thompson and Jamie Lowell along with Thetford Twp Trustee and cannabis law reform supporter, Eric Gunnels. MILegalize will conduct a presentation on the language of the initiative, explain the differences between ballot groups, address concerns raised by area law enforcement and prosecutors, and answer questions from those in attendance.
There will also be petitions available for citizens to sign, and training available for those wanting to volunteer to help gather signatures for the MILegalize campaign.
“How should we legalize cannabis in Michigan?” Lowell asked. “Our Question and Answer session will help people understand the MILegalize proposal and learn that it’s not something to be frightened over.”
“Saginaw has been on the forefront of marijuana law reform in Michigan,” Thompson added. “City residents have already voted in favor of a local legal program; regional residents will get their chance to do the same in 2016.”
The MILegalize campaign has until Christmas 2015 to collect more than 253,000 valid signatures on petitions that are currently being circulated statewide. A new poll by the Detroit News indicates 56% of Michigan residents favor legalizing the adult use of marijuana.
