As the group launches the second half of their petition drive to place marijuana legalization for adult use on the November 2016 ballot, the MILegalize campaign announces a Detroit fundraiser at the city’s swanky eatery The Roostertail Restaurant.
MILegalize is the common name for the Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee. The petition drive was launched June 25th in a ceremony held on the steps of the State Capitol Building. MILegalize has until Christmas to collect 253,000 valid signatures on petitions to ensure the issue of legalized adult use of marijuana appears on the November 2016 general election ballot.
The event is scheduled to coincide with a matching funds donation period. A generous angel donor has volunteered to double all monies raised by the MILegalize campaign during the month of October, up to a maximum of $100,000. The campaign has met previous matching funds offers, including a $100,000 offer concluded in July and a $50,000 matching contribution in August.
“Detroit is an important part of the MILegalize plan,” said MILegalize Chair Jeffrey Hank. “No statewide campaign can be successful without the support of the southeastern Michigan political and business community. This region has a tradition of leadership in the state’s social evolution, and the fundraiser will give people a chance to participate in history.”
Southeastern Michigan is well-represented on the MILegalize Board: attorneys Matthew Abel and Thomas Lavigne, activists Debra Young, Nick Zettell and Jim Powers all reside in the metro Detroit area.
The Roostertail fundraiser on October 28 is targeted at industry leaders, attorneys and interested citizens able to provide a minimum donation of $500. The evening’s program includes a plated dinner, an auction of donated goods and a variety of speakers. A vegetarian menu is available.
The Roostertail is well-known as an elegant dining location with spectacular views of the Detroit River, Belle Isle and both the Detroit and Windsor shorelines. The evening schedule will allow attendees to enjoy sunset views from either the facility’s outside gazebo or from a comfortable restaurant seat.
