Jim Araby, Executive Director of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council, has issued the following statement on the “Pathways Report: Policy Options for Regulating Marijuana in California,” released today by the Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Policy, led by Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.
“This important report offers a roadmap for the future of the cannabis industry in California and nationwide. The Lieutenant Governor has been a leader in advocating for greater regulation, and recognizes the need for improved controls and workforce training before voters approve recreational cannabis in 2016, as poll show they are likely to do.
“The Commission recognizes that a well-trained and protected workforce will aid tax collection, help ensure product safety, fight youth access and diversion to the black market, and prevent unethical dispensary operators from gaining an unfair advantage.”
The UFCW is the only union representing cannabis workers in California, with 1,200 workers already under contract.
