“People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy.”

That was Bruce Wayne as he returned to Gotham to become The Dark Knight. He recognized that to make a difference you could not just do business as usual.

In the 1930’s when the government was trying to stigmatize marijuana so they could tax it, they too used a “dramatic example.”

Reefer Madness. A fictionalized film touting the “horrors” and “abuses” of marijuana. Iconically this is what people remember as the reason public opinion was swayed towards the negative stigma that has been with us for more than 80 years!

Nowadays we can laugh at Reefer Madness as a joke because we know the truth. We’ve all read the books and seen the documentaries about the facts and benefits of marijuana. The problem is those only preach to the choir.

There’s a reason Reefer Madness wasn’t a documentary. If facts and figures worked to persuade people, marijuana would be legal in the US today. People don’t learn by being preached too. The government was smart enough to know that to sway the culture you can’t simply play to people’s logic.

“I think Will & Grace probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody’s ever done so far,” Vice President Joe Biden famously said when endorsing LGBT rights. Even he recognized that a “dramatic example” was the most powerful tool in changing culture.

Now is the time for a new Reefer Madness, one that reverses the stigma and shows pot heads as they really are: productive, college educated, tax paying citizens who simply enjoy a joint at the end of the work day instead of a beer.

Sammy & Sherlock Can’t Get Any is the story of a young couple living together in the suburbs and one day when the town is dry and they can’t find any weed.

Sound familiar?

The film is a positive portrayal of potheads. And by following this couple and seeing the difficulties they have in finding marijuana, while easily being able to get their hands on much more dangerous substances, people will understand the ridiculousness of the current drug policy. When done in an entertaining way you can broaden the audience, make it relatable, and open people to your message.

Sammy & Sherlock Can’t Get Any is the Will & Grace for tokers.

It is the Reefer Madness for legalization.
