While I admittedly have several biased reason to talk up Doug Fine as the bestselling author of Too High to Fail: Cannabis and the New Green Economic Revolution writes a column for NCC every week, I pledge to you that my praise is genuine and a basic Google search can show that I have been a big fan before Mr. Fine started his Drug Peace Bumblebee column for NCC. Doug is a terrific writer who somehow manages to weave personal stories, facts, seriousness and humor into a readable story of whatever topic he is covering.
Doug is an investigative journalist who walks the walks and talks the talk. In Farewell, My Subaru, he documents moving his family off the grid in their New Mexico ranch home. Such a move wasn’t just a ploy, as the Fine family utilize every tool and opportunity to live in an environmentally friendly way. Including raising goats and using hemp diapers for the little ones. The Fine family is even willing to bring baby goats into their home to avoid wild bears escaping recent wildfires.
After spending a year covering the Mendocino County cannabis and law enforcement communities in Too High to Fail, Doug didn’t just move onto the next issue of the day, he became one of our top articulate advocates against the War on Cannabis. Adding a bestselling author with environmentalist credibility is certainly a win-win for the cannabis law reform community. Doug shares his vision of the Drug Peace replacing this Drug War, all across the country, from The Washington Post to Alternet to his local grocery store.
The optimism of Doug is contagious as his encounters all over America provide us hope that the Drug Peace Era is just around the corner. Too High to Fail has just been released in paperback and Powell’s Books is bringing in Doug for a reading. I am looking forward to spending a few days with him and encourage everyone in the Portland area to join me in attending his event at Powell’s this Tuesday, July 9th at 7:30 pm.
