Will the next Michigan Governor legalize medical marijuana?

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Candidates running for Governor of Michigan are supporting legalizing medical marijuana in their 2018 election bids. An event called MI Legalize Gubernatorial was held Tuesday and the topic was legalizing medical marijuana. Candidates attending the event included Bill Cobbs, Shri Thanedar, Gretchen Whitmer, Abdul El-Sayed and Evan Space. The event was also a fundraiser for the 2018 MI Legalize campaign. Organizers of MI Legalize plan to add a recreational use proposal on the ballot next year as well.

Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) said that “We’ve seen other states do it wrong. In Michigan, we’ve got a chance to do it right.” Former military vet and Republican gubernatorial candidate Evan Space also wants to legalize marijuana because of its ability to treat vets with PTSD.

Another gubernatorial candidate for Michigan and ex-Detroit cop Bill Cobbs also supports legalizing marijuana, saying “Most cops don’t want to arrest people for marijuana because we understand what it does to somebody’s life when we give them a criminal record this insignificant.” He added that weed prohibition has failed.

The political organizer of MI Legalize Sam Pernick is planning similar fundraisers throughout Grand Rapids and the 11th precinct for the next 6 months.
