Cynthia Nixon Supports Legalizing Marijuana
Before we start, let’s clear up a common question: “Which one was she?” Cynthia Nixon played Miranda, the cynical, red-haired lawyer on HBO’s “Sex and the City.”
Speaking on The Wendy Williams Show Wednesday*,* Ms. Nixon’s first TV interview since entering the race on March 19, she said: “I’m absolutely for the legalization of marijuana. Let’s capture some of that revenue.”
When asked about legalizing marijuana at a private fundraiser last week, Nixon “pumped her fist and said yes,” according to Dan Davenport, an editor and writer who attended the event.
“She was very exuberant about that point,” said Davenport in The NY Times, noting that Nixon framed the issue around raising revenue.
Cynthia Nixon, a native New Yorker whose activism goes back nearly two decades, refuses to accept corporate donations. She is, nevertheless, enjoying considerable success early on by raising money from small donors.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the two-term Democrat with no problem accepting corporate donations, has long been opposed to legalizing recreational marijuana.
New York became the 23rd state to legalize medical cannabis in 2014, although the state’s MMJ program still remains one of the most restrictive in the country.
Patients with diseases including AIDS, cancer and epilepsy have a great deal of difficulty obtaining medical marijuana because there are so few recommending physicians in New York. Once patients manage to get a rec from a doctor, they are limited to using only non-smokeable versions of cannabis.
Governor Cuomo, who has has called marijuana a “gateway drug,” says that prohibiting smokeable weed keeps it out of the “wrong hands.”
Nixon is challenging Cuomo, whom she called a “closet Republican,” in New York’s Democratic primary for governor, to be held in 2020.
