How Much Dabs Can You Make with Marijuana?

February 1, 2015
Marijuana dabs are a form of concentrate that will get you much higher than regular weed

As legal medical and recreational cannabis markets increase throughout the United States, various modes of consumption compete for popularity among cannabis consumers. Smoking flower was the originally preferred method of consumption, then vaping became ubiquitous as e-cigarette sales surged. Recently, concentrates, widely known as dabs, wax, or shatter have caught the attention of cannabis enthusiasts everywhere. Learn here how to make dabs and expand your pot palate.

Making Dabs: How to Make Dabs

Are dabs cheaper than flower? Not this diamond dabs!

How do you make dabs at home? There are many types of dabs with varying degrees of production difficulties. If you’re a beginner, I would suggest purchasing pre-made dabs before trying to create your own. We’ll focus on creating rosin as it’s much less risky to create compared to other dabs because it does not require or contain a flammable solvent. Rosin is nearly identical to shatter, but rosin production is much safer.

Here’s what you’ll need to make dabs from weed: dry marijuana, dab collection tool, hair straightener/flat iron, and parchment paper. After gathering these materials, follow these easy steps:

  1. Turn the hair straightener to low or medium. If you can, set the temperature between 250°F and 300°F.
  2. Place the cannabis on the parchment paper. The amount you use should not be wider than the straightener as you’ll be using the straightener to press the weed and extract the dabs with heat. Make sure to leave enough paper on both sides of the pot to collect the rosin.
  3. Fold the paper in half so the parchment covers the weed. Line up the straightener directly over the weed under the paper. You’ll then squeeze until you hear a sizzle. After 4-6 seconds, carefully set the paper down away from the straightener.
  4. Slowly open the parchment paper to peek at the concentrated beauty within. You should see yellow rosin next to the pressed weed. Collect the rosin dabs with your dab collection tool, and them into a silicone puck or other concentrate container.
  5. Usually you’ll be able to repeat steps 1-4 to squeeze a little bit more out of the weed. Refold, press, and extract a couple more times if you can, but don’t char the cannabis. You will perfect this technique over time with practice.

How Much Wax from a Pound of Trim?

Cannabis consumers often ask these questions: how much weed is a pound of dabs, and how much weed is one gram of dab? Using trim, you can expect an “in versus out” ratio of 6%, meaning one pound of trim will produce 26.88 grams of concentrate (448 grams in a pound X .06). Keep in mind that these are approximations; there is no consistent, guaranteed dab quantity yield due to varying ranges of THC and other compounds found in different strains of flower.

How Many Dabs is a Gram of Shatter or Wax?

How much dabs does it take to get high? Only one tiny taste of this shatter will do the trick.

Cannabis concentrate consumers will get about 10 dabs out of a gram of shatter or wax. Of course, this is a rough approximation with significant variance, but a good rule of thumb, nonetheless. How much is a gram of dabs? This depends on regional pricing, but generally wax costs $40 per gram. How much is a pound of wax? Multiply $40 by 28 (number of grams in a pound), then multiply that product by 16 (number of ounces in a pound). $40 X 28 X 16 = $17,920. A pound of wax is nearly $20,000 by the gram, but don’t worry. Even if you took 10 dabs per day, it would take about 448 days to burn through a pound of wax.

How Many Flowers Does it Take to Make 1 Gram of Shatter?

It takes nearly a quarter ounce of flower to make 1 gram of shatter. Flower has an “in versus out” ratio of 20%, meaning one pound of flower will produce 89.6 grams of concentrate (448 grams in a pound X .20). We can then divide 89.6 grams by 16 (number of ounces in a pound) to calculate the amount of flower needed to make 1 gram of shatter (89.6/16 = 5.6). Therefore, you can get 5.6 grams of shatter from an ounce of flower. If we divide this shatter amount (5.6) by 28 (number of grams in an ounce), we can calculate the amount of flower needed to make 1 gram of shatter (5.6/28 = 0.2). So, it takes nearly a quarter ounce of flower to make 1 gram of shatter.

How Much Shatter Do You Get from an Ounce?

Flower has an “in versus out” ratio of 20%, meaning one pound of flower will produce 89.6 grams of concentrate (448 grams in a pound X .20). We can then divide 89.6 grams by 16 (number of ounces in a pound) to calculate the amount of flower needed to make 1 gram of shatter (89.6/16 = 5.6). Therefore, you can get 5.6 grams of shatter from an ounce of flower.

How Many Grams of Bud Are in a Gram of Wax?

Flower has an “in versus out” ratio of 20%, meaning one pound of flower will produce 89.6 grams of wax (448 grams in a pound X .20). We can then divide 89.6 grams by 16 (number of ounces in a pound) to calculate the amount of flower needed to make 1 gram of shatter (89.6/16 = 5.6). Therefore, you can get 5.6 grams of wax from an ounce of flower. If we divide 28 (number of grams in an ounce) by this wax amount (5.6), we can calculate the amount of flower needed to make 1 gram of wax (28/5.6 = 5). So, nearly a quarter ounce, or 5 grams of flower, are in a gram of wax.

Concentrates have rapidly increased in popularity in recent years. Unfortunately, due to the lack of regulations in the cannabis black market, concentrate production can be dangerous with the use of flammable solvents. This has given cannabis concentrates a bad name among the general population. Yet, as marijuana legalization spreads throughout the U.S., we can all look forward to safe methods of cannabis production and consumption.

How To Make Dabs FAQ:

How Much is an Eighth (8th) of Dabs or Wax?

This depends on regional pricing, but generally wax costs $40 per gram. An eighth of dabs would be 3.5 grams. If you multiply the cost per gram by the number of grams (3.5 X 40) you’ll get 140. So, an eighth of dabs costs approximately $140 per eighth.

How Much is a Quarter Ounce of Wax?

This depends on regional pricing, but generally wax costs $40 per gram. A quarter ounce of dabs would be 7 grams. If you multiply the cost per gram by the number of grams (7 X 40) you’ll get 280. So, an eighth of dabs costs approximately $280 per quarter.

Is Possession of Dabs a felony?

This depends on the state in which you live, but if marijuana possession is a felony in your state, dabs will be as well because like marijuana flower, dabs contain THC which is a controlled substance. Make sure to educate yourself on your state’s cannabis laws.
