The California Democratic Party voted unanimously to approve a resolution making the legalization of recreational cannabis an official party platform.
The resolution makes it clear that the California Democrats “support the legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana, in a manner similar to that of tobacco or alcohol”. The party also called for an immediate ban on fracking, a controversial procedure used by the oil and gas industry.
The cannabis resolution was approved without debate, and through a unanimous voice vote. Cheers erupted after the vote.
“I supported it [cannabis legalization] because hopefully it will stop Hispanic and black kids from being put in jail for minute quantities of marijuana,” said Beverly Brown, a delegate from La Mirada, an 82-year-old nurse practitioner.
The vote comes as several initiatives to legalize cannabis aim for either the 2014, or 2016 ballot.
