A Grand Rapids art gallery will host a fundraiser for the MILegalize petition drive on October 29.
The fundraiser will be held at the impressive Richard App Gallery and includes a cocktail party with select speakers. The event was conceived and organized by MILegalize Board Member Michael Tuffelmire from Grand Rapids. Tufflemire is a veteran political operative in the Grand Rapids area. “I believe the state’s west side is full of staunch legalization supporters who know this is unique moment in our state’s history,” he said. “They want to be a part of it.”
MILegalize is the common name for the Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee. The petition drive was launched June 25th in a ceremony held on the steps of the State Capitol Building. MILegalize has until Christmas to collect 253,000 valid signatures on petitions to ensure the issue of legalized adult use of marijuana appears on the November 2016 general election ballot.
The event is scheduled to coincide with a matching funds donation period. A generous angel donor has volunteered to double all monies raised by the MILegalize campaign during the month of October, up to a maximum of $100,000. The campaign has met previous matching funds offers, including a $100,000 offer concluded in July and a $50,000 matching contribution in August.
The party features wine, great Michigan beers and fabulous hors d’oeuvres from Kangaroo Kitchen. The ticket price is $150 general admission, $500 Supporter, $1000 Friend, $2500 Hero.
The MIlegalize petition drive is going well at the halfway point with people excited about the citizen-led campaign to responsibly regulate and reform cannabis law, with tax revenues supporting roads, schools, and local communities with at least 25,000 jobs created in science, farming, medicine, and industry. MILegalize Chair Jeffrey Hank noted, ”Our supporter network of over 10,000 energized citizens is poised to lead Michigan to the gold standard of policy reform. Grand Rapids is well-positioned to benefit economically and could be Michigan’s leading city in the development of new medicines and “green” agribusiness technologies, and with it’s dynamic craft brewing industry, we have learned lessons about not stifling the innovation of small business job-creators. MILegalize needs every concerned citizen’s help to give voters this option. We need Grand Rapids leaders to engage in this effort, and donors willing to match that enthusiasm and help us finish this campaign the right way.”
