Indiana: Oppose Provisions To Felonize Minor Marijuana Offenders

indiana marijuana house bill hb 1006A sentencing reform measure (House Bill 1006) pending before state lawmakers includes provisions that seek to significantly increase criminal penalties for marijuana possession offenders.

According to Associated Press reports, newly introduced Senate provisions would increase criminal penalties regarding the possession of more than one-third of an ounce of marijuana from a criminal misdemeanor

These provisions are fiscally irresponsible and are needlessly punitive. Further, they are in conflict with public opinion. According to statewide polling data in December, a majority of Indiana voters prefer eliminating criminal penalties for marijuana possession offenses, not raising them.
