wichita kansas marijuanaMarijuana reform is sweeping across the country, especially when it comes to marijuana decriminalization. More and more local elections are seeing marijuana decriminalization on the ballot. A prime example of that would be Wichita, Kansas, which is likely not the first place you would think of for marijuana reform. Per The Joint Blog:

An initiative to decriminalize cannabis in Wichita, the largest city in the State of Kansas, has officially qualified for the April ballot, according to the Southcentral Kansas Peace and Justice Center.

If approved into law by city voters, the initiative would remove criminal penalties for the possession and use of cannabis and cannabis paraphernalia, making it a simple $50 ticket. Under current Wichita law, the possession of even a miniscule amount of cannabis can result in a jail sentence of up to a year.

Wichita, Kansas is a very large city, right in the heart of the American Mid-West. If marijuana reform can succeed there, it can succeed anywhere. I’m hopeful for a victory in Wichita, which will hopefully lead to a statewide legalize initiative victory in the near future.
