The charge against Shekina Pena, owner of Your Healthy Choice Clinic in Lansing, was announced by Attorney General Bill Schuette and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson. Pena is charged with a misdemeanor count of trying to influence voters with a “valuable consideration.” The offense is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine

Schuette’s office says the dispensary offered free marijuana in late July in exchange for citizens registering to vote and encouraged the new voters to support Lansing City Council candidates based on their position on regulation of medical marijuana dispensaries.

Michigan voters approved a law legalizing medical marijuana in 2008.
