The issue of marijuana legalization is a hot topic in media across the country. Port Huron area residents will be able to speak directly to the people proposing a legalization program for Michigan during a Town Hall-style meeting taking place at Port Huron’s City Hall on July 21.
The Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee, commonly known as MILegalize, will take questions from citizens during the two-hour session beginning at 6:00 in Public Meeting Room of the City Hall building, 100 McMorran Blvd, Port Huron.
The MILegalize movement has strong local partners, including Laura Rigby of Port Huron. Laura led the signature drive that placed the issue of local marijuana legalization on the ballot in Port Huron in 2014; residents approved that ballot question during a November vote. Rigby is also leading a MILegalize signature gathering drive during the Boat Night festivities in Port Huron from July 16-19.
“People are curious but generally supportive of the MILegalize proposal,” Rigby said. She will be joining MILegalize Board members Rick Thompson, Jamie Lowell and David Rudoi on stage July 21.
“We believe the people should learn the facts about legalizing marijuana from the source,” Thompson, of Flint, said. “MIlegalize has conducted Town Hall meetings in cities across Michigan, and we’re still planning more of them.”
“Everyone is welcome at the Town Hall,” Lowell added. “We’ll answer questions, train volunteers on petition signature collection and help people become comfortable with the notion that legalizing marijuana isn’t scary.”
The MILegalize campaign has until Christmas 2015 to collect more than 253,000 valid signatures on petitions that are currently being circulated statewide.
A new poll by the Detroit News indicates 56% of Michigan residents favor legalizing the adult use of marijuana.
