I’ve never been lucky enough to attend the NORML Aspen seminar in the past, and it looks like I won’t be going this year. But if you are able to go, I encourage you to do so because I’ve heard amazing things from previous attendees. Below is more about the event:

I am writing to remind everyone that the 2014 NORML Aspen Legal Seminar is live on the NORML website, and we are now accepting registrations online. Please register now and join us in Aspen for a great legal seminar and a lovely long weekend in the Rockies, where marijuana is now fully legal for everyone 21 and older, regardless of why you smoke or where you live. No physician’s recommendation needed.
The dates for the legal seminar this year are Thursday, May 29; Friday, May 30; and Saturday, May 31; and it will once again be held at the Gant Hotel, our usual venue right on the side of beautiful Aspen Mountain. We are holding a limited number of reduced-rate rooms at the Gant; one-bedroom, one-bath condos are $175; two-bedroom, two-bath condos are $195.
Social Events
As in previous years, we will be holding an opening reception at the Gant on Thursday evening; a NORML benefit dinner at the lovely home of Christine and Gerry Goldstein on Friday evening catered by Chef Chris Lanter of Aspen’s famous Cache Cache Restaurant; and a cook-out with live music at Owl Farm, the legendary home of the late Hunter S. Thompson, on Saturday afternoon.
Non-Lawyers Also Welcome at this Seminar
Those non-lawyers with an interest in this event are also welcome to register and attend. This provides an opportunity to meet and socialize with some of the leading criminal defense attorneys in the country and to learn more about some of the cutting-edge issues defense attorneys are dealing with both in traditional states and in legalization states.
The Program
The speakers and topics this year will cover an array of fascinating subjects. Day one will include a presentation on the ethics of setting and collecting fees by Abe Hutt, Denver, CO; the latest update on DUI cannabis, both the science and the law, by Paul Armentano, NORML deputy director; challenging profile stops by Cal Williams, Colby, KS; and legal marijuana and employment issues by Kimberlie Ryan, Denver, CO.
On the second day Joe Rogoway, Santa Rosa, CA, will discuss cross-examining the narc; Jeri Shepherd, Greeley, CO, will talk about using your state constitution to defend your client; Elizabeth Kelley, Spokane, WA, will talk about the challenges of representing those with mental illness and intellectual disabilities; Jerri Merritt, Denver, CO, will address the several federal responses to marijuana legalization, both good and bad; and Jeff Weiner, Miami, FL, will cover the five most important skills any good lawyer must master.
And on the final day, Heather Harris, Philadelphia, PA, will lecture on forensic drug chemistry for the defense attorney; Phil Cherner, Denver, CO, will discuss the ethical implications of practicing law in the world of legal marijuana; Hal Haddon, Denver, CO, will address implications of recent federal sentencing jurisprudence and executive orders; and Gerry Goldstein, San Antonio, TX and Aspen, CO, will wrap-up with his annual review of important new Supreme Court rulings.
The World of Legal Marijuana
The 2014 Aspen seminar offers those from out-of-state a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with like-minded friends and colleagues from around the country in a beautiful state that has fully legalized marijuana for all adults, and to witness first-hand the legal dispensaries, several of which are located in Aspen itself. It is a glimpse into the future of all of America in one of the most picturesque locations in the country.
Please register early and join us in Aspen for a great legal seminar and entertaining social events. By registering now, you make it possible for us to obtain advance CLE approval from your state; walk-ins are also welcome, but we may have to apply for CLE credit after-the fact, resulting in a delay for your CLE credits.
