The City Council of Austin, Texas has voted to approve a resolution in favor of legalizing medical cannabis. The vote was unanimous.

Although the resolution doesn’t actually legalize medical cannabis, the capital of Texas showing such conclusive support for allowing the medical use of cannabis will certainly have an impact on the state-wide discussion to legalize medical cannabis which is ongoing, with a proposal planned to be discussed in the 2015 legislative session.

Here’s the full text of the approved resolution:

Approve a resolution amending the City’s state legislative agenda to include support for: (1) legislation that would create an affirmative defense to prosecution for patients who are being treated by a licensed physician and who use medical marijuana; or (2) legislation to legalize the use of medical marijuana.

Austin is the 11th most populous city in Texas with a population of roughly 840,00.
