A LA Medical Marijuana Dispensary Ban Was Supposed To Start Today
The Los Angeles ban on medical marijuana dispensaries was supposed to take affect today, but it has been suspended, for now. Below is a letter posted on the Los Angeles City Clerk’s website:
On August 30, 2012, the City Clerk’s Office received a referendum petition regarding Ordinance 182190, commonly referred to as the “Gentle Ban.” From the date the referendum petition was received and throughout the time it will take for the City Clerk to verify the signatures on the referendum petition (estimated 15-45 days), the City Attorney’s Office will not enforce Ordinance 182190. The ordinance may or may not remain suspended after the City Clerk’s review depending on whether the City Clerk determines that the petition contains the required number of valid voter signatures.
Notwithstanding the stay on enforcement of Ordinance 182190, the business of medical marijuana continues to be an unpermitted land use in the City. Further, as stated on all City business tax registration certificates, a tax registration certificate does not constitute a license, permit, or land use approval; it is solely a tax collection document.
Interested parties should contact their own attorneys, as applicable City and state laws will continue to be enforced by the City Attorney’s Office, as well as other law enforcement and regulatory agencies. Complaints about medical marijuana businesses should be referred to the LAPD Narcotics Hotline at 1-800-662-2878.
Score one for democracy! Keep up the pressure Los Angeles!
