Mississippi’s House of Representatives voted 112 to 6 Thursday to approve House Bill 1231, a measure to legalize medical cannabis oil that’s low in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and high in CBD (cannabidiol). The bill’s already passed the state’s Senate, and now heads to the governor.

If House Bill 1231 becomes law, the possession of low-THC cannabis oil will be legal for those who receive a recommendation from a physician; the University of Mississippi Medical Center would be authorized to dispense the medicine.

The bill is named after Harper Grace Durval, a 22-month-old girl who has a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome.

A spokeswoman for Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant stated that; “The governor will review it closely when it reaches his desk.”
