The United States considers Mexico its #1 drug trafficking threat, and perhaps for good reason. About 90% of the cocaine used in the country comes through Mexico. In recent years the drug wars have escalated to an extremely violent zenith, with drug-related homicides increasing astronomically. The United States recommends travelers avoid certain states in Mexico, while also assuring visitors that no particular threats against US citizens are apparent.

Citizens are “urged to defer non-essential travel to the states of Tamaulipas and Michoacan, and to parts of the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and Jalisco.
