This is a truly exciting time to be in the Oregon cannabis industry. Oregon was the second state to legalize medical marijuana, and recently voted to legalize recreational marijuana. Between dispensaries and recreational sales, and all of the ancillary opportunities that go with them, there is so much potential in Oregon right now for cannabis entrepreneurs. Oregon has some of the the best cannabis on the planet, and for far cheaper than other states that have legalized marijuana. Combine that with all of the fun things to do in Oregon, and Oregon is poised to be a national leader in the cannabis industry.

But there is a lot that is still up in the air, especially when it comes to recreational marijuana sales. Officials are still drafting the rules that will govern the recreational industry, and have sent a bill to the Oregon Governor that would allow early, limited sales via medical marijuana dispensaries. And even after all the dust settles on the rulemaking process, I think it’s safe to say that there will be future legislation that will change the rules again and again.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) has been tasked with overseeing the recreational industry. There is a lot going on behind the scenes as the agency tries to figure out how to regulate an industry that has been operating in the shadows for a very long time. Knowing that things are still in flux, now is a better time than ever to hear from the Executive Director of the OLCC, Steven Marks. Steven Marks will be speaking at the Cannabis Creative Conference in Portland, Oregon, which will take place on July 29th and 30th. Below is more about Steven Marks, courtesy of the event’s website:

The 53-year-old Steven Marks is a veteran of public service, with 30 years of service to the State of Oregon. Prior to joining the Oregon Liquor Control Commission as Executive Director, he served as a policy advisor in the Office of the Senate President, a Senior Policy Advisor to the Governor, and as Chief of Staff to the Governor during his service to the state. From 2004 to 2010 Marks was president of his own public policy and public affairs consulting business, The Marks Network. In 2013, he returned to state government service as a policy advisor within the Chief Operations Officer’s Office, Oregon Department of Administrative Services.

Marks is a graduate of Sutherlin High School and earned his undergraduate degree and Masters Degree in Public Policy, Planning and Management from the University of Oregon.
