missouri marijuana decriminalization hb 512 testimonyI received the following message from the New Approach Missouri campaign:

Yesterday morning a registered nurse who has battled breast cancer and a decorated Vietnam veteran who has previously served as the head of the Missouri VFW and now sits on the Show-Me Cannabis board proudly walked into the Missouri Secretary of State’s office and filed initiative petitions to allow medical marijuana in Missouri. The proposal, which would be on the November 2016 ballot, would allow patients with debilitating medical conditions to use medical cannabis under the supervision of their doctors. But it won’t happen without your help.

It’s long past time that we stopped treating patients as criminals and instead join the 23 other states that allow patients and their physicians this medical treatment option. This initiative would protect our sickest and most vulnerable citizens by keeping the government out of the doctor-patient relationship, and I hope I can count on your support in the long campaign ahead.

Over the next 50 days, state election officials will prepare summary ballot language and evaluate the language of the initiative before certifying it for circulation. Once the petition is certified for circulation, we can begin collecting the nearly quarter million raw signatures we will need by May to place this measure on the ballot next November.

We know that a solid majority of Missourians support allowing patients access to medical cannabis, so the biggest hurdle we must overcome is raising the money to gather those signatures to access the ballot. To hire a professional petitioning company to manage both volunteer and paid signature gatherers, we will have to raise over a million dollars by spring.

If you believe that doctors are better guides to our health than politicians and that patients shouldn’t be thrown in jail cells for using their medicine, I urge you to take action to support this initiative now.

Share this announcement by forwarding it to five friends and posting it to Facebook, Twitter, or other social media.

Most importantly, make a contribution of $10, $25, $50, or more to start the campaign off on strong footing.

Thanks,

Jack Cardetti
