Filmmakers Linda Booker and Blaire Johnson tell a North Carolina story with national, even global, significance in Bringing it Home, a new documentary film in production.

A father’s search to find the healthiest building materials leads him to the completion of the nation’s first hemp house. Hemp with lime is a non-toxic, energy efficient, mildew, fire and pest resistant building material. The drawback – industrial hemp is currently illegal to farm in the U.S.A. where it once was an important crop.

Industrial hemp is a non-psychoactive plant that makes 1,000?s of sustainable products and offers solutions for global warming, nutrition, poverty and deforestation. Here in the U.S., hemp could be a money-making crop for farmers and create jobs. But why can’t we grow it here?

BRINGING IT HOME tells the story of hemp: past, present and future and a global industry that includes textiles, building materials, food products, bio-plastics, auto parts and more. At the June 8th event Booker will share a short preview trailer featuring interviews and footage from recent trips to Spain, England and Washington D.C., documenting the international hemp building movement and other hemp-based industries. The filmmakers are currently raising production funds to complete filming.

Anthony Brenner, an Asheville home designer, is featured in the documentary as he pursues his quest to create a healthy home for his
daughter Bailey and other children with disabilities. Bailey has a rare genetic disorder and a severe sensitivity to chemicals. Brenner discovered that industrial hemp-based Hempcretes are ideal for non-toxic qualities. In fact, the material boasts energy-saving thermal attributes and is resistant to fire, mold and pests. Hemp once had a prominent place in American history as a crop used for oil, textiles, rope and paper (the Declaration of Independence is drafted on hemp paper) the current political/ industrial climate has blocked hemp farming efforts here.

Co-directors Linda Booker (of Pittsboro, NC and By the Brook Productions) and Blaire Johnson (of Carolina Beach, NC and Green Hope Productions) met at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in 2003. Booker is the filmmaker behind the feature documentary “Love Lived on Death Row.”

Production funds are being raised on IndieGoGo at www.igg.me until June 15th. Tax-deductible contributions can also done at www.bringingithomemovie.com
