A new government funded study published in the journal Psychiatry Research has found that heavy cannabis use leads to better emotional memory and brain function in those who are schizophrenic.
For the study – which was conducted at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Montreal - researchers “performed a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of emotional memory in schizophrenia patients with cannabis abuse”.
They conclude; “Our results suggest that emotional memory and prefrontal lobe functioning are preserved in dual-diagnosis patients [those who consume cannabis, and also have schizophrenia].. These results are consistent with previous findings showing that cannabis abuse is associated with fewer negative symptoms and better cognitive functioning in schizophrenia.”
