BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Democratic Doug Jones has beaten alleged pedophile and sexual predator Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate seat in Alabama yesterday. The race has dominated the news cycle the last few weeks because Moore has been accused of molesting girls as young as 14 and has sexual assault accusations going back almost 40 years from women and girls. Moore is also a contemptible racist who thinks that our country was at its greatest during slavery.

Jones is the former U.S. Attorney famous for prosecuting two of the Ku Klux Klansman responsible for murdering 4 little girls by bombing a Black church in 1963. Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., and Bobby Frank Cherry were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the Birmingham murders. It is believed that Black voter turnout pushed Jones to a slim victory over the alt-right Moore.

Amidst the accusations, Trump and the Republican party strongly supported Moore in a disgusting display, despite the numerous accusations, in an attempt to hold on to a republican senate seat and push through a tax bill that is detrimental to the working class and the poor. The win means that once Jones is sworn into office, the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate will decrease from to 51-49.

Poetic justice prevailed as Jones, who has a reputation as a civil rights advocate, won the election on the first night of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. He said in his victory speech that “At the end of the day, this entire race has been about dignity and respect,” said Jones. “This campaign has been about the rule of law. This campaign has been about common courtesy and decency.”

Jones is the first Democrat in almost 25 years to be elected in the red state. He is against Trump’s tax plan and is a supporter of legalizing medical marijuana. He also supports fixing Obamacare, decriminalizing recreational marijuana, the DREAM Act, funding Planned Parenthood, raising the minimum wage and gay marriage.
