It wasn’t that long ago that the cannabis industry was considered to be a fringe industry. I remember when I co-founded this blog in 2010 how many of my friends and family thought it was silly. To be fair, not only was I jumping into the marijuana world when the blog started, I was also starting a blog. Blogs are very common now, but back then, they weren’t so much. My how things have changed for both blogs and the cannabis industry!
According to the ArcView Group’s annual marijuana industry research publication, there was roughly 5.4 billion dollars in legal marijuana sales in 2015 in America. That number is expected to increase to 6.7 billion in 2016, and is projected to grow to 21.8 billion dollars by 2020. That’s a massive industry. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why people are clamoring to get into the marijuana industry. But, as I’m sure many newbies are learning, jumping into the industry is not as easy as people think.
There cannabis industry may be the most complex industry on the planet right now due to the difference in laws at the federal and state levels (and some local levels for that matter). To complicate things, the landscape is almost always changing and evolving. I get asked all the time for advice on how to get into the industry, or if they are already dipping their toe in the industry, for advice on how to take the full leap into the deep end. There’s A LOT to it. Think of how hard it is to get into just about any other industry, with all of the struggles, research, and mentor-seeking that goes into it, and add to that federal prohibition and a seemingly never ending desire by elected officials to throw monkey wrenches into things.
It’s can be a daunting task getting into the industry. But with great effort comes great reward, and I’m not just talking about money. Carving out one’s niche in the marijuana industry has to be a fantastic and exciting way to live. I’m still in the process of figuring it out myself, and wouldn’t consider myself to be a ‘full time member’ of the marijuana industry at this point, but I am always trying to learn more and trying to figure out a way to become a full time member of the industry.
I know a lot of people that are in the industry, and while they deal with a lot of headaches, they are almost always full of joy and passion because they are chasing their dreams. And a lot of them are crushing it too. For a lot of people, that’s the true American dream – to have a job/business that you absolutely love, that you can pour your life into, and reap the benefits and rewards of that labor. The growing marijuana industry is ‘the industry’ to be in right now, and it’s easy to understand why.
Something that I tell everyone that asks me for advice about the marijuana industry is to do your homework (it should be never ending if you are doing it right) and to seek out the advice of TRUE industry experts. Beware ‘experts’ which are everywhere. They are always quick to offer up generic facts and ‘big picture ideas’ but don’t provide any details and don’t have a proven track record of success. One person’ who’s industry advice that I value a great deal is Steve DeAngelo.
Steve DeAngelo is a true industry expert. As I was quoted as saying in Steve’s book The Cannabis Manifesto, “I don’t know that there’s anyone on the planet right now who possesses Steve DeAngelo’s level of business savvy and knowledge of the cannabis plant. When he offers up his wisdom, people should listen and try to soak up as much knowledge as they can. I know I do.” Steve’s resume and industry presence speaks for itself. You don’t become the head of the largest cannabis dispensary on the planet by shear luck. It takes knowledge of both the cannabis world and the business world to achieve Steve’s level of success.
If you want to know how to get into the industry, and more importantly succeed, you will be hard pressed to find someone with better advice than Steve. But, there’s one problem – there is but one Steve DeAngelo, and I can say from first hand observation, he is BUSY. It’s obvious why. Everyone wants to learn from Steve and wants to get any amount of time with him that they can. Those opportunities are few and far between because not only does everyone want to pitch their ideas to Steve and try to strike up a partnership, but Steve also has to have his downtime as we all do.
That’s why I was so excited to see that Green Flower Media created virtual courses hosted by Steve, in which Steve imparts his wisdom on how to crack into the cannabis industry. Green Flower Media does an outstanding job and I love every thing they have done, including the Virtual Cannabis Health Summit. The course they did with Steve is one of an ongoing series on all types of cannabis topics. The course with Steve DeAngelo includes:
