In less than a week since the application process opened for recreational cannabis business licenses in Washington, the state has received over 800 applications from those wishing to grow, sell or process cannabis.

According to Rick Garza, Director of the state’sLiquor Control Board - the entity tasked with handling recreational cannabis licenses – roughly 200 of the applicants are for retail outlets; the state will allow 334 throughout the state.

The state plans to issue business licenses for retail outlets regardless of any ban or moratorium in place in the city the retail outlet is planning to open in; however, Garza warns that the licensees might have to sue the city to overturn the ban. The board has asked for a formal state attorney general’s opinion on whether cities and counties can override state regulations, but there’s no time frame on when they’ll receive a response.

The board will be accepting applications until December 19th.
