Every day, there are thousands of items that are sold over the internet. With such a large reach, the web is a great place to make money selling off old toys, electronics, and other items that people just want to ditch! One thing that doesn’t usually make it to the internet selling market is drugs. While Silk Road did a great job of facilitating the illegal drug trade online, they are no more. Nor have they been around since the dawn of the web. But recently, The Guardian did a little bit of marijuana history that showed that the first ever internet transaction was most likely a bag of bud.
In the early 70s, when the internet was first starting to take hold in modern society, a few smart college student from Stanford and MIT pushed the first internet sale through. The product? A big old bag of marijuana. According to the internet history book titled “What Dormouse Said”, the students used something called “Arpanet” to make the first transaction.
“In 1971 or 1972, Stanford students using Arpanet accounts at Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory engaged in a commercial transaction with their counterparts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before Amazon, before eBay, the seminal act of e-commerce was drug deal. The students used the network to quietly arrange the sale of an undetermined amount of marijuana.”
Since technology has exploded and everyone and their mother has a smartphone, it’s far easier to obtain cannabis in the states of Massachusetts and California, as well as most other states in the US. Massachusetts is following California’s lead and implementing a medical marijuana program, beginning this year. It’s just funny to think that all of the technology that surrounds eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist started with a bag of Mary Jane.
