True OG Marijuana Strain Review

Cannabis enthusiasts in the US today enjoy a greater availability of marijuana strain options than ever before. With legal medical and recreational (adult-use) cannabis, you will no longer suffer through brick weed seed showers on your rolling tray. Instead, your local dispensary will provide an endless variety of pot genetics for your choosing—option paralysis will be your only potential problem. What are the best strains? Is OG Kush #1? Is there a true OG strain?

What Is True OG?

True OG was birthed out of West Coast cannabis varieties. The strain arrived in Los Angeles in 1996 when Matt “Bubba” Berger brought it from Florida to legendary cultivator, Josh D. Berger brought “The Bubba” as well, which would be later used to create another true kush strain, Bubba Kush. Since its inception, OG Kush has become an international standard, often functioning as a principal genetic building block for many other cannabis strains, such as Headband, Girl Scout Cookies, Tahoe OG, and Ghost OG.

Is True OG a Sativa or Indica Strain?

Marijuana strains fall into three general categories: sativa, indica, and hybrid. True OG Kush falls into the hybrid category. The original OG strain was first cultivated in Florida, in the early ’90s when a strain from northern California was crossed with a Hindu Kush plant from Amsterdam.

True OG Strain Information and Profile

The True OG Strain is a hybrid with a unique terpene profile that provides a complex herbal aroma mixed with hints of spice, pepper, and citrus. The myrcene and limonene terpenes create the herbal and citrus notes, while the caryophyllene terpene produces a peppery punch. The THC content range for true OG weed is 16-20%. There is less than 1% of CBD in this strain, rendering no relevant amount of this particular cannabinoid.

There are several medical benefits associated with OG Kush. Predominantly, this strain serves as an effective pain reliever; however, it’s also effective at alleviating anxiety, depression, and insomnia. OG Kush has a relaxing, numbing effect which is significantly helpful for those suffering from chronic illnesses. As with all cannabis strains and products, reflect on your own personal cannabis experience, and start low, go slow. If the cannabis dose is too high, there is an increased risk of experiencing unpleasant side effects.

What Is the Difference between Kush and OG?

There are several significant differences between Kush and OG. Kush originated in the Hindu Kush Mountains, while OG came from Florida. Kush’s terpene composition includes fenchol, camphene, a-terpineol, linalool, and terpinolene, whereas OG includes myrcene, a-pinene, guaiol, eudesmol, and trans-ocimene. These varied terpene profiles give each of these strains their own unique flavors, aromas, and effects.

How Many OG Strains Are There?

The real OG strain has been a genetic source for over 100 strain variations. Many of these strains have the “OG” identifier within their names but several do not. Some of the most popular strains genetically branching from OG include Bubba Kush, Tahoe OG, SFV OG, Fire OG, Headband, and Girl Scout Cookie.

What Is Fire OG?

Fire OG, also known as Fire OG Kush, is an indica-dominant hybrid strain crossed between OG Kush and SFV OG Kush. Fire OG will have a peppery and citrus flavor and aroma similar to OG Kush. Fire OG is one of the strongest OG strains and is often preferred by those who require high THC content for consumption. It can serve as a sedative, more similar to a traditional indica than sativa.

What Does OG Stand for in OG Kush?

As OG Kush is an incredibly popular strain in Los Angeles, most cannabis connoisseurs believe the OG stands for “Original Gangster,” an homage to the gangster rap scene that originated in south-central LA in the 1990s. Original Gangster is a moniker often given to old school, stalwart gang members with great wisdom who have been reliable for years.
