Platinum OG Strain Review

January 27, 2014
The illustrious Platinum OG strain.

Platinum OG: a name that evokes refinement and the most extravagant luxuries—only to be used by high society, pun intended. Plus, nobody wants to smoke something called Dirtweed OG. The genetics behind OG strains have held steady popularity for decades and will continue to do so in the future. Platinum OG is considered by many to be the “heaviest” of the OG strains. As such, you should make careful considerations including your cannabis history and specific medical ailments before taking the platinum challenge.

Platinum Weed

Platinum weed, also known as Platinum OG or Platinum Kush OG, has unclear origins. Master Kush (indica), OG Kush (hybrid), and an unnamed strain (speculated to be Grandaddy Purp) were crossed, resulting in the birth of this intense (Platinum strain). These pungent, earthy, aromatic buds are generally lime green with prominent orange hairs and covered in THC crystals, which give this platinum weed its name.

Marijuana strains fall into three general categories: sativa, indica, and hybrid. The Platinum OG strain is classified as an indica, as it is technically a hybrid strain with 75% indica and 25% sativa proportions. This (Platinum weed strain) certainly produces indica effects when consumed and will leave even the most seasoned stoner in a couch-locked stupor. If you’re interested in cultivating this strain, you can purchase Platinum OG seeds from most online seed banks.

Terpene Profile, Flavor, and Aroma of Platinum OG

Don’t let the name fool you: Platinum OG doesn’t have a metallic flavor or aroma in any way. The aroma has strong earthy notes similar to soil after a storm. Along with the earthy fragrance, you’ll also detect an herbal flavor with hints of pine after inhalation. Some also report a slight peppery or coffee aftertaste, but these observations are less common.

Terpenes provide specific flavors, aromas, and medicinal properties for cannabis strains. Platinum OG is highest in the myrcene terpene, which is very common for indica strains. It’s also high in caryophyllene, and to a lesser extent, limonene. The strong herbal flavor and aroma produced by the Platinum OG strain comes from the high amount of myrcene, while the peppery aftertaste is caused by the significant presence of caryophyllene.

Cannabinoid Content

The THC content for Platinum OG ranges from 17-20%. This strain has less than 1% CBD with no relevant amounts of minor cannabinoids such as CBG and CBN. As the medicinal understanding of marijuana increases with more supportive empirical evidence, the inclusion of minor cannabinoids will become more common in cannabis genetics and cultivation.

Effects and Medical Treatment

The strong indica nature of (Platinum OG) goes beyond relaxation, inducing full sedation and a euphoric state for most consumers. If your experience with cannabis is minimal, I’d advise choosing a sativa strain with less THC concentration than (Platinum OG). This isn’t your dad’s brown brick weed circa 1976. Don’t wake-and-bake with the Platinum, roll one up in the evening or before bed instead.

As with most indica strains, Platinum OG is very effective for treating chronic pain and insomnia. The heaviness effects tend to weigh the body down with a calm that both quiets the mind and relaxes muscles. The strain promotes relaxation and produces a numbness throughout the body that alleviate pain and decrease muscle spasms often associated with pain. While the Platinum OG strain can improve mood and alleviate depressive symptoms, it’s not usually recommended for anxiety due to the potential intensity from the high-THC content.

Platinum OG Kush Strain Review

The OG Kush Strain always gets great reviews.

The Platinum OG Kush strain has an immediate onset felt in the head initially that quickly resonates throughout the body, producing a numbing, sedating effect. This is your typical “one-hitter-quitter” weed as it only takes a couple puffs to feel strong effects. Platinum OG Kush is best reserved for evening and bedtime use with its heavy indica nature and moderate to high THC content.

Is Platinum OG Good?

This depends on what you’re looking for, but I can say Platinum OG is good at what heavy  indicas are supposed to do: producing a sense of total relaxation. If you’re looking for an uplifting, daytime strain, look away from Platinum OG, but if you’re aching from a long day at work and looking to wind down, this is the perfect strain.

What Makes a Strain Platinum?

Platinum strains generally have one common denominator: a combination of Kush strains with one having OG genetics. Platinum OG Kush, for example, is a cross between Master Kush, OG Kush, and another unknown strain. If you don’t have both Kush and OG genetics, then you don’t have a Platinum strain.

How Strong is Platinum Kush?

Even though numerous strains today have THC concentrations above 20%, Platinum Kush packs a punch with 17-20% THC. Platinum Kush is a heavy indica that sedates both mind and body. Intense effects can be felt within a few puffs, making the Platinum one of the strongest Kush strains, which is no easy feat.
