How To Identify Leaf Miner Damage On Your Marijuana Plants

Leaf miners are any number of insect species whose larvae burrow between the epidural layers of leaves, feasting on the plants’ cells as it goes.  Leaf miners leave a tell-tale trail behind them, evident by a white or brown squiggly pattern on the tops of the cannabis leaves.

Adult leaf miners are often flies resembling the house fly.  They lay eggs on the underside of the leaves.  Once the eggs hatch, the larvae emerge to burrow between the leaves’ layers.

Because they burrow and are protected by leaf on all sides, leaf miner maggots are resistant to pesticides.  The easiest way to kill them is to squish them dead in their den and remove the affected leaves.

Introducing a parasitic wasp to dine on the larvae and using yellow sticky tape to capture adults are effective methods of eradication. Although they leave ugly trails, leaf miners serve no real threat to the cannabis farmer.
